To me nature is like an inventor, scientist, artist, composer, philosopher, an expert of different fields all in one. Nature is not only about places, trees, wildlife, mountains, skies, rivers and sunlight that we see when we look out, but also intangibles like the whisper of the wind and the smell after a rain. Do you know that nature has written many books? The books that contain the history of the planet earth. My favorite ones are stories of the past environment and climate, which I have been studying through wood that turned into stone—petrified wood. Each petrified wood sample is like a chapter of a giant earth history book or a beautiful work of art created by nature, each chapter has its own story preserved in the cell structure. For example, unclear growth ring patterns with wide water conducting vessels consistently spreading throughout the wood suggest a tropical climate. Identifying fossil wood to find their nearest living relative trees will help us understand the environment where those trees grew. Evidence of the past flora can be found in petrified forests of many countries including Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, China, India, Greece, Argentina, Madagascar, and the United States. If you would like to take a walk in the nature, I suggest you visit one of them. It is like John Muir’s quote “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks”.
